XF-120 Buying TTU

Update May 2011: TTU can now be purchased from the Warner Brothers Archive Collection!

Buying TTU from ebay? Why can't we buy TTU commercially? Check out some comments here.

ScooterMoviesShop.com (added Nov. 2008)
Happy to report on a new source, ScooterMoviesShop.com. As reported by Mike G: Both picture quality and sound are very good, I would recommend this source.  $11 for the DVD as of this post.

Update: Jan. 2009
From Terry S: I justed wanted to report that I purchased TTU from ScooterMoviesShop.com and I'm very satisfied with it. I got an e-mail the day after I ordered telling me that it shipped, and got the movie within a week of ordering it. Price was $11, plus $5 for shipping. You get a standard DVD case with just the DVD, no booklet or anything. The DVD face is printed with a reduced version of the cover artwork--not very striking, but who cares--it's "Toward the Unknown!" Pop it into the player and the movie kicks right in, with no menu or chapter stops or extras. The quality is quite good--much better than the broadcast-to-Beta-to-VHS tape version that I made many years sgo. I strongly recommend this source.

MovieLead.com
Terry L. dropped me a line an mentioned he was able to purchase a pristine copy from MovieLead.com. It's not a bootleg. The company supplies movies to TV stations and the media. You have to call them about price and availability at 1-866-741-8714. More details on their web site.

For those of you in the UK, Roland G. reports he purchased a DVD compatible with UK region DVD players.

Just a note, I've noticed that the price changes for some people. I'm wondering if there's some type of "volume discount" - the more people that order, the more the price goes down. We can only wish!

Comments from those who have ordered

Peter W. just placed his order & here's what he passed along:

They are a service that works primarily with the film and TV business and they locate old and obscure movies from various archives. TTU is available from an archive in Santa Monica and it has been made into a digital master. The cost is $39.95 for VHS and $44.95 for DVD (shipping by priority mail is $5). It takes about 2 weeks.

I received Toward the Unknown two weeks after I ordered it. I got the DVD version. The quality if very good--it's not a remastered version, so it's not pristine like you see with high-dollar restorations. The color shows a little age in places but overall the quality is more than satisfactory. The aerial scenes are very good except in a few seconds of the scene where the Gilbert X120 is flying with Major Bond in the the Sabre--the image disappears from overexposure, but this is happens only very briefly.

The rest of the movie is excellent and I would recommend it highly to TTU fans.

From Chris C.

The movie came in a plain DVD box with the disk being labeled with a picture of an F-35 with "Toward the Unknown" and the cast names. Tell people that if they have bought a VHS copy they have an illegal bootleg copy.

The full price (incl. shipping) was $42.00. For a custom order, their service was friendly & quick... I received my shipment in a little less than two weeks by U.S Post-Priority mail. The DVD quality is excellent, with good color and sound... best picture clarity I've ever seen of the movie!

From Rich I.

I was getting worried my VHS tape I recorded a few years ago off our local PBS station was about to wear out. Then I read the postings about Movie Lead and I placed an order. In less than a week, I received my DVD copy.

I only looked at the first few minutes just to check it. The quality seems to be about the same as my VHS, which was pretty good for an out of print film.
